During World War I, Joseph Pilates further developed his exercise techniques in a British camp. He used minimal equipment, often improvising with bed springs to create resistance exercises for his fellow colleagues. This ingenuity laid the groundwork for what would later become known as the Pilates Reformer.
After the war, Pilates moved to New York City in 1926, where he opened his first studio. His method quickly gained popularity among dancers and performers, who valued its ability to enhance strength, flexibility, and body control without causing injury. Today, Pilates is practiced worldwide, with a variety of approaches and adaptations that maintain Joseph Pilates’ original principles.
Mat Pilates is performed on the floor using a mat for cushioning. It relies on body weight and gravity to create resistance and involves a series of exercises designed to improve core strength, flexibility, balance, and overall body awareness.
Reformer Pilates uses a specialised piece of equipment called the Reformer, which consists of a sliding carriage, springs for resistance, and various straps and bars. This apparatus allows for a wider range of exercises and greater resistance control compared to mat Pilates.
